Weekend Trip

Portland Bouldering Roadtrip

As we haven’t managed to get up to anything particularly exciting this year, due to various reasons which I won’t go into here, Izaskun bought an interesting book about bouldering in Britain (called Bouldering Britain).

So we decided to take a page from the book and go for a weekend trip away to the Isle of Portland, which for those of you who aren’t aware it is a small piece of land in the south west of England, just next to Weymouth.

The drive there is about a 3 hour drive but of course, it took longer for us as we had traffic and stops along the way. However, eventually we did arrive and proceed to find some good bouldering spots which happen to be quite straight forward as Portland is pretty small.

Where to go…

Additionally, the weather was surprisingly warm (even hot) which definitely helped the exploration further.

into the unknown…

So we descended along a lovely scenic walk around the clifftops overlooking the sea until we finally decided to settle on a spot to start our bouldering activities.

Sunshine, sea and space… lovely.

So once a place is settled, it is important to see what we have and do some initial route setting and planning.

So, once we’ve planned and prepared (mentally and physically) we are off..

After a full day of climbing and some challenges in moving from site to site, we decided to move on and head to Weymouth which was only about a 30 minute drive.

After arriving into Weymouth and finding our hotel, we discovered that there was festival in town, which would explain the amounts of drunks on the streets and old people present in our hotel. The hotel was a bit dated and appeared to be popular with those who preferred a different age of history.

Anyways, we managed to stay and sleep well after a large Indian dinner in the local restaurant. We awoke early in the morning and moved to get the car make the trip home. Overall a great trip, definitely a place we will want to come back to in the near future.
